Following last year’s successful screening of La Venganza, the VientoFuego Productions team returns to The Loft Cinema with their new film, CARAMELO. Written and produced by BEN LOPEZ and directed by JORGE LUIS URBINA, Caramelo follows the relationship between Miguel, a free spirited young student and Jose, a school janitor who carries the burden of a tragic-filled past.

Working on a documentary, Miguel (Ivan Encinas, La Venganza) meets Jose (Hector Ayala), a friendly janitor who, after learning more about his project, grants him full access to the school. Encouraged by their growing friendship and intrigued by Jose’s background, Miguel convinces the janitor to be interviewed on camera. Although initially reluctant, Jose reveals his role in the tumultuous late 1960s student movement in Mexico. At home, Miguel’s older stepsister Emilia (Angelica Rodenbeck, La Venganza) also stokes Miguel’s interest in this era, as she shares stories about her father, who was among the thousands that disappeared during the Mexican student movement. Despite being torn by conflicting emotions, Miguel captures a heartfelt profile of a man hiding a painful secret.

Inspired by Mexico’s rich history and his own father’s anecdotal experience, writer/producer Ben Lopez joins forces with director/ cinematographer Jorge Luis Urbina to create a powerful and engaging film. Beautifully shot on location in Southern Arizona and featuring heartfelt performances complemented by a wonderful music score, CARAMELO is a complex and intimate story that takes the audience on an intense, poetic and unsettling journey.

Film mixer at 6 pm. The filmmakers and cast will host a Q & A immediately following the film.
