"A wonderful, magical film, featuring a terrific lead performance from Gene Wilder, marvelous music, and the sort of gleefully macabre, almost Python-esque humour that comes as close to capturing the spirit of author Roald Dahl's books as any big screen adaptation ever has." - THE MOVIE GAZETTE
Pull out your Everlasting Gobstoppers and take a bite out of this weird, wacky and perfectly "scrumdiddlyumptious" 1970s kiddie musical that's haunted the dreams of more than a few adults, and served as the inspiration for Tim Burton's big-budget 2005 remake starring Johnny Depp.
Gene Wilder stars as Willy Wonka, an eccentric, world famous candymaker who hides five golden tickets in candy bars for five lucky children. Young, good-natured Charlie (Peter Ostrum) wins one of the tickets hidden amongst thousands of Wonka chocolate bars. What have Charlie and the other four kids (Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Mike Teevee and Violet Beauregarde) won? A tour through Willy Wonka's hallucinatory chocolate factory, led by the loveable, strange, and often mean-spirited Wonka himself.
The chocolate factory is like a fantasy world: crazy color schemes, wild inventions, secret rooms, busy oompa-loompas (with green hair and orange faces!), and lots and lots of delectable sweets. But Wonka has a hidden agenda, and during the tour he tests each child's character and honesty, with most of the nasty brats (except sweet Charlie, or course) failing miserably and facing a series of bizarre punishments cooked up by the possibly demented Candy Man (you'll never look at a blueberry the same way again).
Based on Roald Dahl's classic children's book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
