"FIVE STARS! A stunner...the most original nightmare in years. Summon up the courage and go." - Joshua Rothkopf, TIME OUT (NEW YORK)
"A richly satisfying, blackly comic mystery" - Karina Longworth, THE VILLAGE VOICE
"Pleasurably surreal...a cool, eerie commentary on family dynamics and the dangerous power of adolescent sexual curiosity." - Lisa Schwartzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
"One of the most distinctive, original and genuinely unsettling pieces of cinema to emerge over the past year." - Wendy Ide, THE TIMES (LONDON)
A hyper-stylized mixture of physical violence and verbal comedy, DOGTOOTH, from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, is a darkly funny look at three teenagers confined to their parents’ isolated country estate and kept under strict rule and regimen — an inscrutable scenario that suggests a warped experiment in social conditioning and control. Terrorized into submission by their father, the children spend their days devising their own bizarre games and learning an invented vocabulary (a salt shaker is a “telephone,” an armchair is “the sea”) — until a trusted outsider, brought in to satisfy the son’s libidinal urges, starts offering forbidden VHS tapes in return for sexual favors, leading the children to believe there might be an unexplored world outside of their own highly-controlled existence.
By turns shocking, hilarious and deeply strange, DOGTOOTH, winner of the prestigious Un Certain Regard award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, is a unique movie experience and unlike any other film this year.
