VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1967)
"A lurid '60s sensation ... delightfully absurd. An irresistible mess that's even more fun once you memorize the dialog and sing along with the musical numbers." - Don Willmott, AMC Filmcritic.com

"VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is the Mt. Everest of bad movies about show biz." - Steven Rebello, BAD MOVIES WE LOVE

"In the Valley of the Dolls, it's instant turn-on... dolls to put you to sleep at night, kick you awake in the morning, make life seem great - instant love, instant excitement, ultimate hell!"

They sure don't make 'em like this anymore. Well, John Waters might, if he had a big enough budget. A steamy "inside look" at the gloriously sleazy and glamorous world of catfighting, backbiting show-biz starlets, this 1967 Hollywood hit, adapted from the controversial bestselling novel by Jacqueline Susann (often cited as the bestselling novel of all-time, go figure!) is a high-gloss, day-glo camp artifact -- a time capsule (or some kind of capsule, anyway) -- from the screwy '60s, when a broad was a broad, a bitch was a bitch (whether "her" name was Neely O'Hara or Ted Casablanca), and a "doll" was a prescription drug. Filled to the top with bursting bust lines, beehives, booze, and barbiturates, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS tells the scandalous story of three "nice girls" whose reckless journey through the gutters and glittering lights of Broadway, Hollywood and beyond leaves some of them dead, some of them married (or worse!), and some of them rolling around in the garbage (literally).
While the once-shocking and scandalous language and behavior of these Broadway babes has been co-opted by many subsequent trash films (Hello, Showgirls!), time has only enhanced the stature of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS as one of the ultimate camp classics.
Starring Patty Duke, Susan Hayward, Sharon Tate, Lee Grant and Barbara Parkins (and juicy, scene-chewing dialogue such as the infamous: "They drummed you out of Hollywood, so you come crawling back to Broadway. But Broadway doesn't go for booze and dope--now get out of my way, I've got a man waiting for me!"), VALLEY OF THE DOLLS truly is the laugh-soaked pinnacle of sleazy showbiz melodramas.
