BLOW JOB / 1963 / 35 mins. / silent and b&w
In BLOW JOB, one of Warhol's most notorious shorts, a young man (DeVeren Bookwalter) is filmed as he is apparently receiving the sex act named in the title. The "action" is driven by the limited expressions (which range from boredom to narcissism) on the actor's face: we see only his head and shoulders, rigidly framed so that all off-screen space is left to the imagination. A wicked commentary on voyeurism and audience expectations, BLOW JOB's take on boredom, titillation and the unmoving camera continues to be influential today.
MY HUSTLER / 1965 / 67 mins. / sound and b&w
One of Warhol's earliest narrative films, MY HUSTLER offers a glimpse into the lascivious activities of a "Dial a Hustler" service. The “story” concerns an aging homosexual who rents a butch blond hustler (played by Paul America) to bring to his Fire Island home for the weekend, only to find him being wooed by the competition, both male and female. Initially conceived for the soft-core porn market, MY HUSTLER became a landmark of cinematic sexuality in the 1960s, and today remains a fascinating document of a bygone era.
