Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Haneke (Cache, Funny Games) returns with this provocative and mysterious thriller about life in a seemingly idyllic German farming village on the eve of the first World War.
The residents of the village operate on the same notions of class, hierarchy and morality that have reigned for a thousand years, until a rash of mysterious, unexplained acts of cruelty and violence beset the schoolchildren and their parents. Though they at first appear coincidental, it begins to seem that they are not, in fact, accidents at all. The town's pastor, baron and doctor do their best to adjust, but, like increasingly desperate heroes in a Kafka story, are too embedded in the status quo to stem the tide. Inexorably, the poison seeps into the fabric of everyday life, foreshadowing the horrific catastrophes that soon will redefine German identity.
Haneke's gripping tale, winner of the Palme d'Or award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, is a probing and unsettling look at the roots of evil, made all the more disturbing by its beautifully shot (in luminous black and white) scenes of carriage rides, church dances, family dinners and courting rituals which provide a heartbreaking lyricism, mourning a world vanishing before our eyes.
