“Engages with illuminating insights.” - Joe Leydon, VARIETY
“'Is cinema more important than life?’ François Truffaut asked. Anyone tempted to answer 'yes' will enjoy this documentary, directed by Boston Phoenix critic Gerald Peary.” - Walter Addiego, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
“This rapidly paced, breezily entertaining look at a mutating field evokes nostalgia for a time when movies really seemed to matter while somehow avoiding despair about its future.” - Greg Rickman, SAN FRANCISCO WEEKLY
"Does an excellent job in telling the history of not just film criticism, but of American film itself.” – Tim Basham, PASTE MAGAZINE
For a hundred years (virtually the entire history of American movies) film critics have championed this medium they so unabashedly love. They advise audiences in deciding what movies to see, and why. Better, their reviews illuminate the film-going experience, suggesting paths for viewers to enter cinema more deeply, thoughtfully and appreciatively. Taking an entertaining, humorous and personal approach, FOR THE LOVE OF MOVIES is the first documentary to dramatize the rich saga of American movie reviewing.
Directed by Boston Phoenix critic Gerald Peary, FOR THE LOVE OF MOVIES offers an insider's view of the often tumultuous critics' profession, with commentary from some of America's best-regarded contemporary film reviewers, including Roger Ebert (The Chicago Sun-Times), A.O. Scott (The New York Times), Lisa Schwarzbaum (Entertainment Weekly), Kenneth Turan (The Los Angeles Times) and Richard Schickel (Time Magazine). We also hear from young, articulate Internet voices, including Harry Knowles (ainitcoolnews.com) and Karina Longworth (spout.com), as well as esteemed critics from eras past, including Gene Siskel, Bosley Crowther, Vincent Canby and Molly Haskell.
From the raw beginnings of criticism before THE BIRTH OF A NATION to the colorfully contentious Pauline Kael-Andrew Sarris battles of the 1960s and 70s to the struggle today between youthful bloggers and the besieged print establishment, FOR THE LOVE OF MOVIES is a true cinephile's dream, a celebration of the ever-changing role the best American critics play in the beloved pastime of going to the movies.
Narrated by Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson.
