"The Immigrant is one of those rare, strikingly beautiful film experiences that transport you to another world.” – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune

“A rich, beautifully rendered film boasting an arrestingly soulful performance from Marion Cotillard.” – Peter Debruge, Variety

“NYT Critics Pick! Has a depth and purity of feeling that makes other movies feel timid and small by comparison.” – AO Scott, New York Times

The striking historical drama The Immigrant stars Academy Award-winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) as Ewa, a young woman who sails to New York with her sister Magda from their native Poland in search of a new start and the American dream. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda is ill, and the two women are separated. Ewa is released onto the mean streets of Manhattan while her sister is quarantined. Alone, with nowhere to turn and desperate to reunite with Magda, Ewa quickly falls prey to Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix, The Master), a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. The arrival of Orlando (Jeremy Renner, American Hustle) - a dashing stage magician who is also Bruno's cousin - restores her self-belief and hopes for a brighter future, becoming her only chance to escape the nightmare in which she finds herself. Directed and co-written by James Gray (Two Lovers). (Dir. by James Gray, 2013, USA, 120 mins., Rated R, The Weinstein Company) Digital
