“An enjoyably unpretentious celebration of the guilty pleasure we can take from a stupid-as-all-get-out car chase or from watching things blow up real good … ratchets up the absurdity tenfold and enters the realm of the sublime.” – Scott Foundas, LA Weekly
This hilarious and action-packed “buddy cop” spoof from the makers of Shaun of the Dead follows a straight-laced police officer (Simon Pegg) who is forced to work in a sleepy, crime-free village alongside his bumbling partner (Nick Frost), only to find that things are not quite as idyllic as they seem. Nicholas Angel (Pegg), is the finest cop London has to offer. He's so good, he makes everyone else look bad, so Angel's superiors send him to a place where his talents won't be quite so embarrassing - the quiet and seemingly crime-deficient village of Sandford. Once there, he is partnered with well-meaning but overeager police officer Danny Butterman (Frost), a huge action movie fan looking for a chance to experience the life of gunfights and car chases he's only dreamed about. Just as it begins to appear as if Sergeant Angel has been relegated to an uneventful existence in the relative calm of the countryside, a series of horrific "accidents" lead him to suspect that the tranquil hamlet of Sanford has fallen prey to a sinister plot which reeks of foul play. Soon, the mismatched duo is forced to rely on inspiration from Butterman’s beloved Hollywood blockbusters to turn into the ultimate pair of tough guys. Co-starring Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Steve Coogan, Timothy Dalton and Martin Freeman. (Dir. by Edgar Wright, 2007, UK, 121 mins., Rated R) Digital
