“A delicate and absorbing character study … gets some unique performance mileage out of Wiig.” – Justin Chang, Variety

"Watching Kristen Wiig's lived-in and alive performance ... is to be in the presence of something very, very special." - Sheila O'Malley, RogerEbert.com

"Ms. Johnson and the screenwriter, Mark Jude Poirier, have transformed a taciturn masterpiece into an absorbing, messy, modest story of damaged relationships." - AO Scott, New York Times

Hateship Loveship, based on a short story by Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro, features comedy-vet Kristen Wiig in her first dramatic role as Johanna, a profoundly shy, shabby housekeeper hired to care for Mr. McCauley (Nick Nolte) and his granddaughter Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld). Despite her outgoing nature, Sabitha carries hidden wounds from the death of her mother years before, while her father (Guy Pearce) is a hapless recovering drug addict with an undeniable ragged charm. In an act of mean-spirited rebellion, Sabitha fosters a pseudo-relationship between Johanna and her father through a series of forged emails, never dreaming of the potential harm. However, Johanna is not a demure wallflower, but rather a woman for whom the phrase "still waters run deep" could have been coined, and the young girl's cruel prank provokes Johanna to indulge in something long missing from her life: the dream of a future and a home of her own. An emotionally resonant and compelling drama filled with nuanced performances, Hateship Loveship also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Christine Lahti and Nick Nolte.
