See the new drama Child of God, based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, before its national theatrical release at this very special New York Film Critics Series preview screening featuring a captured-live post-film discussion with writer/director/star James Franco, moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers! The New York Film Critics Series, broadcast to 50 selected major markets, takes place exclusively in cinemas and is never available on TV or online.

The second New York Film Critics Series screening for July will feature a special preview of the new drama Child of God, based on the acclaimed novel by Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men), written and directed by the film’s star James Franco (127 Hours), and co-starring Tim Blake Nelson (Oh Brother, Where Are Thou?), Jim Parrack (True Blood) and Scott Haze (As I Lay Dying). This uncompromising excursion into American Gothic, adapted from the 1973 Cormac McCarthy novel, is set in rural Tennessee in the early 1960s. Lester (Scott Haze), an unstable, childlike man, is evicted from his farm. He retreats with his rifle into the backwoods, sets up a makeshift home in an abandoned cabin and roves the landscape, wreaking havoc and upsetting and intimidating almost everyone in his path. Lester is identified as a local menace by the county sheriff (Tim Blake Nelson), and as his antisocial behavior veers in increasingly unnatural directions, he withdraws into a subterranean existence, regressing to an almost animal-like state.
The New York Film Critics Series is the first-ever live national premiere screening series. It is dedicated to producing inspiring events in a collaborative environment and to nurturing the long-term success of better, smarter movies. Each NYFCS screening brings prestigious, live New York City screenings of soon-to-be-released films to the best independent cinemas in America. These screening events are moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers, and include a preview screening of a new film prior to its national release, interviews with talent from the film and special behind the scenes content. These screenings are scheduled to take place once a month and will happen approximately 12 times per year. Recent NYFCS premieres and live chats with directors/stars have included such films as Chef, Nebraska and American Hustle. (Dir. by James Franco, 2013, USA, 104 mins., Rated R) Digital
