“The most suspenseful American film of the year: sudden, terrifying and excitingly singular.” – Gabe Toro, IndieWire

An intensely suspenseful take on the classic American revenge story, Blue Ruin follows a mysterious outsider whose quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal, bloody battle to protect his estranged family. In director Jeremy Saulnier’s award-winning follow-up to his 2007 horror comedy Murder Party, we meet Dwight, a vagrant with a mysterious past who scavenges for food in dumpsters and sleeps by the beach in a broken-down car. His aimless existence is interrupted, however, when he receives notice that a man from his past is being released from prison. Instantly, Dwight jumps into action, returning to his childhood home to protect his relatives and prepared to carry out an act of vengeance. Despite his lack of experience, Dwight remains obsessively committed to his mission of revenge at all costs. But what Dwight has overlooked is that just as he has a family himself, his enemy still has one as well. And once certain lines are crossed, the only possible outcome is tragedy. Taut, surprising and often shocking, Blue Ruin is a gripping tale of family and vengeance, as well as a thought-provoking riff on classic ‘70s revenge thrillers like Straw Dogs and Rolling Thunder.
