“One of the best and liveliest teen comedies of the ‘80s … a fast and funny nostalgia trip for those who grew up with it, and one that will still engage younger viewers.” – Casey Burchby, DVD Talk
A quiet night of babysitting turns into an adventure even Indiana Jones could appreciate in this action-packed ‘80s comedy from director Chris Columbus (Home Alone)! 17-year-old Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue, in her squeaky-clean Karate Kid teen movie days, way before she snagged an Oscar nomination as a world-weary prostitute in Leaving Las Vegas) resigns herself to a night of babysitting after her "dream" date stands her up. Expecting a dull evening, Chris settles down with three kids for a night of TV ... and boredom. But when her frantic friend Brenda calls and pleads to be rescued from a seedy bus station in downtown Chicago, the evening soon explodes into a comic nightmare of hair-raising adventures beyond her wildest imagination. Unable to leave the kids at home, Chris loads the entire gang into the station wagon and heads downtown. Once our innocent babysitter and her three sassy charges leave their safe suburban surroundings and head for the heart of the big city, the screwball craziness begins as they encounter car thieves, knife-wielding gangs, gun-toting truck drivers, and, worst of all, Chris's duplicitous boyfriend. Can our plucky heroine rescue her pal, get over her rat fink boyfriend AND return the rugrats back home before their parents return? (Dir. by Chris Columbus, 1987, USA, 102 mins., Rated PG-13) 35mm
